////Applications for the I/O Residency are now closed.////
Launching in October 2010, the aim of this residency is to provide an opportunity for an exceptional early or mid-career artist to absorb the practical potential of new technologies, network with specialist practitioners, have regular time and space to experiment and develop their own work, benefit from critical discussion with a dedicated advisory group of artists and creative industry professionals.
We believe that unpressured development and access to space and resources is of great benefit in the development of new artworks. Therefore, the I/O Residency offers input and supported output, but it does not burden the process with an exhibition deadline or other imposed goals beyond that which the process itself presents.
We offer stimulus and technical input, and in return aim to boost the development of new artistic thinking for the selected artists, with the ambition that this begins an ongoing relationship between the artist(s) and South Hill Park as contributors, advisors and associates.
The INPUT stage provides opportunity to attend a range of creative technology workshop sessions over October-November 2010 free of charge. These will include:
- Sound:Site: Conference-based event investigating the areas where Sonic Arts meets web communities, participants include Patrick McGinley/Framework Radio, British Library (UK Sound Map), Kathy Hinde, Felicity Ford, SARU Oxford Brookes University a.o.
- Field Recording & Creative Radio: weekend led by Patrick McGinley.
- Electronics for Artists: Creating sound circuits from electronic components, then into interactive visual response via the Arduino microcontroller.
- GPS & Locative Media: Weekend led by Duncan Speakman
- DIY Contact Mic Recording
The OUTPUT stage offers space, facilities and positive critical discussion about the developing work.
TIMESCALE: Support for space and development requirements of the output stage can be worked around the needs of the project as required. It could be a once a week development in the venue from January to March 2011, or an intensive two week build.
BURSARY: This residency is not supported by a bursary, though we are happy to provide in-kind support and input into any funding applications that artists may undertake in order to support their own participation.
APPLICATION: We are hoping for applications from artists whose work will benefit from technical and critical input, use of space within the venue. Artists previous background could be in performative work, with an interest in exploring use of creative technology, or from an artist used to gallery-based work seeking to develop responsive or live work. It’s not set in stone, but the INPUT stage should offer a clear benefit to the artist(s).
To apply, please send CV and a statement on the creative area you are interested in researching and how you feel you would benefit from the I/O Residency.
Deadline for applications is: 16th August 2010
